Fostering Global Innovation: Facilitating a Partnership for BUMA International Group with the University of Queensland

The Challenge

BUMA International Group, previously known as PT Delta Dunia Makmur Tbk (DOID), is a leading energy holding company with operations in Indonesia, Australia, and the United States. In November 2024, BUMA International acquired a 51% stake in the Dawson Complex, a metallurgical coal mining operation in Queensland, Australia, for USD 455 million (approximately AUD 700 million). This marked a significant expansion of the group's presence in the Australian market since BUMA Australia was established in 2021.

However, with over 16,000 employees and a growing international footprint, BUMA recognised the need for robust professional development programs focused on vocational education and the circular economy, particularly for the Group's Research & Development business, PT Bukit Teknologi Digital. The Group sought an education partner from Australia to enhance its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives, ensuring that its workforce and leadership remained at the forefront of sustainable mining practices.

Despite an initial attempt to establish a partnership with The University of Queensland's Sustainable Minerals Institute (UQ, SMI), this did not result in a formal agreement. BUMA sought the expertise of a trusted authority with deep local connections to navigate the complexities of forging a successful partnership.

The Solution

David Widjaja, DWC International Pty Ltd (DWC) was first introduced to BUMA to curate and facilitate an Australian experience for group representatives during a routine business trip to Australia to visit one of the group's mining sites in Emerald. During the leisure part of their stay on the Gold Coast, David strengthened his relationship with stakeholders and gained a deeper understanding of the group's goals, thus was engaged to facilitate a strategic partnership between BUMA and UQ's SMI.

As a trusted advisor with extensive experience in fostering Australian-Indonesian business relations, David played a pivotal role in bridging the gap between the two organisations. David leveraged his strong network, including key contacts within UQ, to revive discussions with the SMI. He personally reached out to the Institute's Director, Professor Rick Valenta, which resulted in a second meeting between the parties. This direct approach, coupled with David's reputation as a reliable authority in the sector, was instrumental in rebuilding trust and aligning the objectives of both parties.

Impact

The result of David's involvement was a landmark Umbrella Agreement between BUMA and SMI, formalised in September 2024. This agreement covers research and consultancy services, ensuring long-term collaboration in advancing ESG practices within the mining sector.

David's expertise not only accelerated the process—achieving an agreement in just two weeks instead of the projected six months—but also continues to consult with both parties to ensure the agreement achieves key partnership milestones and remains mutually beneficial. His staged success fee structure was tied to tangible outcomes, reinforcing his commitment to delivering results.

As part of the agreement, UQ-SMI will deliver ESG-focused micro-credential training in Indonesia, targeting BUMA's leadership and workforce. The training strategy follows a top-down approach: initially equipping C-suite executives with an in-depth understanding of ESG principles before rolling out comprehensive training programs to employees. This initiative is expected to upskill numerous professionals, enhance career longevity, and drive sustainable improvements across the Indonesian mining sector.

By facilitating this collaboration, DWC has not only strengthened BUMA's commitment to sustainability but also reinforced the University of Queensland's role as a global leader in responsible mining practices. The ripple effect of this partnership will extend beyond corporate operations, fostering positive socio-economic impacts in the communities where BUMA operates.
